Marking of Lifting Accessories – Traceability Without Compromising Safety

May 8, 2026 · 1 min read

Eye bolts and shackles are often put into use without an individual identifier, even though they are primary load-bearing devices. They can be damaged during use, so marking lifting accessories and ensuring traceability is a fundamental safety requirement.

Identification is necessary; at the same time, manufacturers generally do not support after-the-fact marking — and this poses a compliance risk.

Practical options:

  • Simple markings (seal, label, paint): not hazardous, but not durable
  • Mechanical markings: impact stamping → to be avoided; dot-peen marking / laser engraving → usable with appropriate control

The conditions for safe laser engraving include, among others:

  • on the outer arc
  • in a non-critical zone
  • with shallow, surface-level depth
  • with documented parameters

Some manufacturers already offer built-in RFID solutions. Their share is growing, but in practice mixed equipment fleets will have to be reckoned with for a long time to come.

Goal: ensuring traceability without affecting safety.

Over the long term, marking lifting accessories and maintaining traceability is best solved with factory-integrated RFID. As an interim solution, laser engraving can work well.

At GÉPTESZT Kft. we support our clients in this — from introduction all the way to confirming, where necessary, through tensile testing of selected samples, that the marking does not affect the conformity of the device.
